Heyyy.... welcome, summer! I love the months June- December. There feels like there's always something to look forward to every month (including great new releases!) Now if only the weather would cooperate...
I like the thought of summer reading- to me, it means fast reads that are engrossing and maybe a little self indulgent. That said, in practice I find I tend to read around new releases year round. I suppose I would like to read "harder" books or more classics, but for now it's working for me. Which leads me nicely into TBR & TBD for June! Here are the books that I'm adding to my TBR list this month... and one that is TBD.
TBR 1 - The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo: A Novel | Taylor Jenkins Reid | Release Date- June 13th, 2017
This is the most summer-y of all of my picks. In The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo a reclusive actress, Evelyn Hugo, chooses a relatively unknown journalist to write her memoir. The journalist has no idea why this woman has chosen her, but is determined to do whatever she can to do her justice. It turns out the two are connected in more ways than one and the reader gets to hear about the rise and fall of one of America's most famous (fictional) actresses. I love books set in New York and i love salacious gossip, so I think this is a good pick for me. I'm expecting a cross between The Swans of Fifth Avenue and The Secret Life of Violet Grant. Bonus- it's got a green cover! Who doesn't need more green books in their collection?!
TBR 2- The Good Widow | Liz Fenton & Lisa Steinke | Release Date- June 1st, 2017
I've been reading Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke since back in the day (and by the day I mean 2011). Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke write books in such an unique way- they're best friends that co-write books. I mean, I don't actually KNOW how they do it, if one person writes one chapter and then passes it on to the other or what, but I can really see this working. Especially if you write books that change between different POVs. Generally, their books are what might be considered 'chick lit', but this latest book is their first suspense novel! I have to laugh, because I DM'ed them on Instagram and said that I can't wait to read this book and that I loved their first two, and someone wrote me back to say 'I'm sorry- those books were the worst!'. Hilarious. I get it, though. Sometimes when I go back and read my little reviews on here, I get so much secondhand embarrassment for my former self. I can't imagine how cringe-y it might be to read your first book! (Unless you're one of those rare people who knock it out of the park on your first try of doing whatever. I don't trust those folks anyway). At any rate- The Good Widow has caught my attention. A woman gets a dreaded visit to her door. It's a police officer telling her that her husband has died. Only thing is, her husband was not Kansas for work as she thought- he was in Hawaii with his lover. How did things get to this point, and what is she going to discover about this mistress and her husband's double life? From what I remember from their first two books, these authors create fictional women that I might want to be friends with, so I'm excited to revisit them again.
TBR 3- The Party | Robyn Harding | Release Date- June 6th, 2017
This is a total wild card that I picked out, strictly based off of the description. It's been compared to Liane Moriarty's Big Little Lies, and really that was enough for me. (But I hope it's not JUST a tool that a good publicist used to sell books! I'm looking at you- The Wanderers!)
The party is a Sweet Sixteen party gone horribly wrong. Jeff and Kim throw invite their daughter's friends over for a sleepover and pizza. But as you would come to expect from a book that's supposed to be riveting, something happens and the night goes horribly wrong. There is an accident and Jeff and Kim's idyllic life is destroyed. There are secrets that come to the forefront, betrayals, and judgment from the community. I'm hooked- and if it's well done, there's a lot of potential here.
TBD- Every Last Lie | Mary Kubica | Release Date- June 27th, 2017
This is the one I'm most excited for this month! Buuuut.... I'm not going to lie. Mary Kubica is hit or miss for me. I LOVED her book The Good Girl, but I borderline hated the one I read last year, Pretty Baby. However, she is an insta-read for me, along the lines of Liane Moriarty and Gillian Flynn. I'll definitely be picking this one up. I also love that she's aChicago author. Every Last Lie opens with Clara's husband and daughter being in a car crash. Her husband is killed but her daughter lives. She thought it was just an accident, but more things come to light and it is starting to sound like someone had something out for him. I got chills just reading the synopsis- I couldn't imagine. I think it's going to make for an engrossing read!
